Victoria, BC - Laura Shirley Jocelyn d'Orban (née Ho-A-Shu) known as Jocelyn, passed away peacefully on April 14th. Jocelyn was born in 1932 in Guyana to Chinese Guyanese parents. Her mother valued education above all, and Jocelyn proved to be an accomplished scholar, earning a scholarship to university in 1955 - the first Chinese woman from Guyana to do so.

At Aberdeen University, where she studied history, English and psychology, she met her future husband Paul d'Orban who was studying medicine. They returned to Guyana after marrying, where they had two children, Charles and Andrea, then moved to London, England, where they lived for 40 years. Jocelyn taught history and was deputy head mistress at The Mount School for girls. She was a strict yet benevolent teacher who was passionate about her subject.

Jocelyn and Paul came to live in Victoria, B.C. to be with their family and enjoyed an active retirement. They continued to travel the world, played bridge and hosted many dinner parties. After Paul died in 2020, Jocelyn became matriarch of the multi-generational household, loving and leading the family with quiet ferocity. Throughout her life she was sustained by her Christian faith, especially in the last few years.

She was loved by all that knew her for her generosity, patience, graciousness and elegance. She was equally sharp, efficient, intelligent, disciplined and knowledgeable, and retained these traits to the very end. Her family, friends, and community members will miss her warmth and her radiant smile.

A graveside service will be held at St Michael and All Angels Anglican Church, 4733 W Saanich Rd, Victoria on Wednesday, April 29th, at 12:00 The service will also be streamed online for those who cannot attend in person. For details of the online service, please email Kyla at kylaxharris@gmail.com.
